Indonesia sebagai Negara Kepulauan, memiliki posisi strategis. Terletak diantara dua Samudra dan 2 Benua menjadikan negara Indonesia sangat diperhitungkan di mata internasional. Hal ini mempengaruhi geo politik dan geo-strategi, baik dari Indonesia maupun disisi negara-negara lainnya. Kalimat sakti ini ter-indoktrinasi di benak kita sejak masa pendidikan dasar. Hal ini mencerminkan betapa kuat dan berpengaruh “negara maritim” ini di kancah hubungan internasional. Bahkan pada era kepemimpinan Kabinet Kerja, Presiden RI ke-7 telah mendengungkan jargon “ Indonesia sebagai poros maritim dunia” sejak kampanye pemilihan Presiden dan Wakil Presiden pada tahun 2014 lalu. Doktrin ini dimunculkan untuk mengggantikan doktrin pemerintahan sebelumnya, “ Zero Enemy Thousand Friends”, yang menjadikan posisi Indonesia terkesan bias di tataran pergaulan internasional.
